The United States may soon build its first new oil refinery in nearly five decades. US President Donald Trump announced that a refinery project in Texas will move forward with investment support from India’s Reliance Industries, one of the world’s largest energy companies. (www.ndtv.com)

The refinery will be developed by a company called America First Refining and is expected to be located at the Port of Brownsville in South Texas. According to the announcement, the facility will process around 160,000–168,000 barrels of oil per day and will be designed specifically to refine American shale oil. (www.ndtv.com)

A Major Energy Project

Trump described the project as a major step toward strengthening the United States’ energy sector. He said the refinery would help boost domestic fuel production, create jobs, and support economic growth in the region.

The project would be the first large-scale oil refinery built in the US since the late 1970s. Over the past decades, most existing refineries in the country have been expanded or upgraded rather than replaced with new facilities. (Financial Times)

Construction is expected to begin in the second quarter of 2026.

Role of Reliance Industries

Reliance Industries, India’s largest private-sector company, is expected to play a major role in the project through financial investment and a long-term purchase agreement.

The company has reportedly agreed to a 20-year deal to buy fuel produced by the refinery, ensuring a stable buyer for its output. (www.ndtv.com)

Reliance already operates the world’s largest refining complex in Jamnagar, India, and is one of the biggest energy companies globally.

Why the Project Is Happening Now

The announcement comes at a time when global energy markets are facing uncertainty. Rising oil prices and geopolitical tensions have increased pressure on governments to secure stable energy supplies.

The US administration has been promoting a strategy of increasing domestic energy production, including oil and natural gas, to reduce reliance on foreign imports and strengthen national energy security. (www.ndtv.com)

Officials also say the refinery could help process growing amounts of American shale oil, which many older refineries were not designed to handle.

Experts Raise Questions

Some energy analysts have questioned whether a new refinery is necessary in the Gulf Coast region, where many of the largest US refineries are already located.

Experts say the location at Brownsville could suggest the refinery is intended partly for exporting fuel to international markets, since local demand in the region is relatively limited. (Reuters)

Despite the questions, supporters say the project could bring economic activity and jobs to South Texas while expanding the country’s refining capacity.
