Melissa Knutson, who worked with the Monroe County Drug Court program, was sentenced to 18 months in prison after pleading guilty to misconduct in public office and obstructing an officer, according to prosecutors.

Sexual Relationship With Patient

Investigators said the case began in 2022, when Knutson was responsible for providing medical care to a man enrolled in a drug treatment program run by the county’s drug court.

Her duties included administering Vivitrol, a medication commonly used to treat substance addiction.

Instead of maintaining a strictly professional relationship, prosecutors said Knutson engaged in multiple sexual encounters with the patient, which violated professional and ethical rules governing healthcare workers.

The relationship later came under scrutiny and was reported to state regulators, triggering an official investigation.

False Allegation During Investigation

When authorities began investigating the situation, Knutson accused the patient of sexually assaulting her.

However, investigators later discovered text messages that suggested the relationship was consensual and that Knutson had discussed denying the relationship if it was discovered.

Prosecutors said Knutson eventually admitted the allegation was false and made to avoid consequences for her actions.

Officials Condemn Breach of Trust

During the sentencing hearing, prosecutors said the case represented a serious abuse of power and trust.

Officials noted that the patient was part of a court-supervised drug recovery program, making him particularly vulnerable.

A judge also criticized the nurse’s actions, saying the conduct damaged public trust in healthcare professionals.

Sentence and Supervision

Knutson was sentenced to 18 months in prison. After completing her prison term, she will serve two years of supervised release.

Authorities said the case highlights the importance of maintaining professional boundaries between healthcare workers and patients.
